How do I get MATIC to pay for gas on Polygon?

Web3

MATIC is similar to Gas in Ethereum and is needed to execute transactions on Polygon. The difference being that it’s (very) cheap as opposed to gas on Ethereum. 5 MATIC should let you execute around five thousand transactions - enough to start a proper collection on Autonomies! If you already hold USDC on Polygon, you can visit https://wallet.polygon.technology/gas-swap/ to top up your wallet with MATIC using USDC. Polygon’s technology allows you to exchange USDC and other tokens in exchange for MATIC without having to pay any gas fees. 1. Select the amount of MATIC you would like to receive. 2. Click on the “approve” button and wait for MetaMask to send you a prompt. 3. Confirm and sign the transactions on MetaMask. Within a few seconds some MATIC tokens should be visible from your MetaMask account. You’re all set!

How do I install MetaMask?

Web3

1. Visit the official MetaMask website and make sure the URL is correctly spelt; https://metamask.io/. 2. Visit the download page and click on install. The website will take you to an extension web store. 3. Click on “Add to (your browser)” and “Add Extension”. 4. Finally, click on “Get Started”. 5. If you’re a first timeMetaMask user, click “Create a Wallet“. If you are already a user, click on “Import Wallet”. 6. After clicking “Create a Wallet” you will be taken to a page to page where you can accept or decline to send anonymised report to improve the user experience. 7. Create a password for your wallet, agree to the terms of use and click confirm. 8. Watch and read the explainers before you safely write down your secret recovery phrase. 9. Confirm the secret recovery phrase. 10. You’re good to go! Once your address is credited with Polygon USDC (see other tutorial), you can now start collecting exclusive audio-files on the Autonomies marketplace!

What is MetaMask?

Web3

MetaMask, crypto-wallets, secret phrases, decentralised applications… For many, this jargon feels overwhelming at first, and getting hands-on feels like taking a big leap. The reality is; none of this is actually so complicated, but the benefits one can gain from understanding how to use these tools are huge. Education is at the core of the autonomies project, so we’re happy to break down for you how to use some of these tools. To use autonomies.io, users need to install and use the MetaMask browser extension. Why you might ask? Because MetaMask allows users to interact with decentralised applications by creating, signing transactions and sending funds around. Through MetaMask and its integrated services, users can also directly top up their wallet with USDC and MATIC with a bank account or a credit card.

Can I get MATIC for free?

Web3

Yes. If you are running out of USDC to swap for MATIC or would like some free MATIC to mint on autonomies, you can directly use one of the faucets available like https://matic.supply/. Faucets are built to ease the adoption of decentralised applications. This faucet lets you claim free MATIC after 5 easy steps: 1. Visit https://matic.supply/ 2. Connect your MetaMask account to "Polygon Mainnet" 3. Click on the "Connect" button 4. Select "I am human" and complete the captcha. 5. After reviewing that the address displayed is correct, click on "Receive"

How do I add USDC to my Polygon wallet on MetaMask?

Getting Started

Payments on the autonomies marketplace are made with USDC, a cryptocurrency that keeps the peg against the U.S dollar. You can read more about how USDC works here. Once installed and set up, open the MetaMask application directly from your browser. To load your account with USDC, you can proceed as follow: 1. Make sure your wallet is connected to the Ethereum network by checking on the top corner right of the popup. 2. Under your ETH balance, click on “Buy”, then select “Continue to Wyre”. You will be redirected to a new page. 3. Select the local currency you would like to pay with, and change the conversion from USD -> ETH to ETH -> MUSDC. You can click the dropdown menu to select MUSDC. Make sure to select MUSDC and not USDC, as MUSDC will credit your address on Polygon, the default network of autonomies. 4. Select the payment method and review the transaction details and click next. 5. Enter the payment information and your billing details. 6. Lastly, double check that the address specified in “your address” matches the one on MetaMask. Accept the T&Cs and confirm. There you go, the transaction is on its way and should appear in your wallet in a few minutes. To view your USDC balance, simply connect your MetaMask to the Polygon Network. If your balance still does not appear, you can manually add the token by copying and pasting the token contract address which can be found here.

Will Autonomies accept credit cards as a form of payment?

Our Platform

There is currently no way to purchase truly decentralised/digital assets directly with credit card without offering custodian services with a KYC process or by compromising on the decentralisation. Autonomies aims at remaining as decentralised as possible. Users have to own cryptocurrencies and own their public/private keys to be able to interact with the smart contracts. However, as the technology involved in this process develops, we expect that this will be a feature on Autonomies in the future. Currently, we recommend our community to make use of the MetaMask integrations to top up their wallet with credit cards. More detail on this can be found here: https://www.autonomies.io/polygon-how-tos

How does it work for artists if they have a publisher?

Our Platform

Nonindependent artists will have to come to agreements with their publishers to be distributing through Autonomies. By extension they can agree to revenue share models with their publishers that they can specify in the NFT minting process.

How do I contact autonomies?

Our Platform

You can reach out using twitter, instagram, our discord server (not using DM’s) and through our email: contact@autonomies.io

Do autonomies.io accept moving image artworks? If so, what file sizes?

Our Platform

We plan to roll out new features to support video in the near future and currently offer PNG, JPG and TIFF for artworks. If you would like to have a moving image, you can always use the GIF format. There is currently no cap to the file sizes for upload.

I sold an NFT on the secondary market for 100 USDC but received less than 100 USDC minus the ecosystem fee. Why is that?

Artists

The reason for this is the enforcement of the royalty policy specified by the artist. During the minting process, artists can set the royalty policy of their choice. This royalty policy, specified in percentage, is applied on secondary market trades. Collectors can see the royalty policy percentage directly on the NFT description on the right bar.

How are payments settled?

Our Platform

When a track is purchased by a collector, the smart contracts will execute several transactions. The payment is settled directly onchain. The artist receives the NFT price minus the ecosystem fee (currently at 10%). For an NFT sold at 10 USDC, this means that 9 USDC are going directly to the artist’s wallet and 1 USDC goes to the Autonomies reserve. Additional beneficiaries specified in the minting process will also automatically receive the set percentage in their wallets.

As a label, can I include an NFT as part of my physical release plan?

Artists

Yes. We advise you to make your NFT more scarce by releasing a unique version separate to your vinyl like a “radio mix” extended mix for DJs.

I am a collector but also a producer, can I join Autonomies as both?

Artists

Yes! To apply to join Autonomies as an artist, please reach out to contact@autonomies.io or fill out our application form.

Can I show off my collection of NFTs on Autonomies?

Collectors

Each time you purchase and hold NFTs, these NFTs are available to see on the profile page of the collector under “Collection”. Soon, we will launch a leaderboard tracking the most active collectors and artists of the ecosystem.

Why make a new fetish out of digital files when we have one in vinyl already?

Our Platform

Because the benefits of digitals way outweigh the cons. It’s less heavy to carry, quicker to release, easier to resell and also more environmentally friendly. These digital files are also not just traditional digital files, but they come with advanced cryptography that allows us to rethink how music is distributed and sold online. It is fairer and promising.

When an old record of mine is resold on Discogs, I don’t get any money. Will it be the same on Autonomies?

Getting Started

It will be different from Discogs, because the protocol we are using is able to do provenance tracking. This means that any revenue generated from trades, even on a secondary market where a record would have been sold ten times, can give back its original creator a share of the sale.

What if I lose my password to my Autonomies wallet.

Getting Started

You will lose your hair!

Where are the files I send to Autonomies stored?

Web3

They can be stored in multiple storage systems including IPFS, Filecoin and the cloud. For security and reliability reasons, we recommend using a cloud service for now.

How long will it take for my NFT to be online?

Our Platform

It will only take a few seconds for your NFT to be online.

Which audio format should my file be?

Artists

As high resolution as possible for our fellow audiophiles. If you aim at your file being played by DJs, we recommend WAV/AIFF 16-44.1 .

Will there be a secondary market on Autonomies?

Our Platform

Yes, the secondary market is coming soon.

What happens if I lose the drive with all my audio NFTs?

Artists

Once uploaded onto Autonomies, your files can easily be retrieved. Losing your drive would not have an implication for your release, except if you were to self host the file.

How much do I set my royalty fee to?

Artists

This is fully up to you. NFT platforms like OpenSea are the ones where crypto collectibles sell the most and have most secondary sales taking place. The standard royalty policy there is 2.5% but can be set freely by the artist.

How do I know which price/run is right for me?

Artists

Given that on blockchain everything is public information, you can have a look at the market and see what others are doing and who sells most. Pricing, number of editions are of course important but remember that it’s the content which actually drives demand. For instance, a musician can decide to sell 100 editions of an audio file for $5, or decide to only sell one edition for $500. One of the principles of autonomies that you can read in our manifesto is the idea of self agency. Artists are free to decide for themselves what they think works best and more importantly represents the true value of their work.

What happens if ETH suddenly massively devalues?

Getting Started

If ETH suddenly massively devalues, people owning ETH see the value of their portfolio reduce. In the context of Autonomies, we bypass market fluctuations by making use of a stablecoin called USDC. USDC basically mimics the value of the US Dollar so that users can reliably assess their purchasing power from one day to the other. It’s a better medium exchange because of this property, and this is why we’re making use of it. What if USD suddenly devalues then? That’s a different story!

What happens if someone plays out a/my NFT without owning it?

Artists

Nothing directly “happens” when someone plays out an NFT that a creator produces. But the creator can make use of NFT licences to specify what the owner of the NFT can or cannot do with the art. This licence can be linked to the metadata of the asset. Several template licences exist, including: https://www.nftlicense.org/ Once purchased, audio files can be freely downloaded by their owners and for as long as they hold the NFT. The ownership rights that come with the NFT guarantee that the file can be retrieved anytime, and that this access can be sold to others. However there is no way to prevent a collector who purchased the NFT and downloaded the file once to play it afterwards, unless enforced in the NFT licence. In a scenario in which someone plays the audio file without owning the NFT, it would be similar to a DJ playing a rip of a vinyl.

How does the secondary market work?

Artists

When all editions of an NFT are sold, users can no longer purchase the NFT directly from the artist. Instead, they can look for content labelled as “second-hand” in the autonomies marketplace. Second-hand files are NFTs sold by users who’ve purchased the music directly from the artist and who wish to re-sell the access to the file. Each time a second-hand trade takes place, the royalty policy defined by the musician is enforced by the blockchain. This generates passive revenue for the creator.

What is the ecosystem fee?

Artists

The ecosystem fee is a percentage of the sale that goes into a reserve managed by the Autonomies DAO. The reserve takes a cut on transactions, in USDC, and this reserve is used to fund the development of the project. The fee is governed by the DAO members and is subject to change based on the community vote.

Best practices for NFT drops / first drop?

Getting Started

Firstly, make sure it's worth minting, check what you submit is a high enough standard, double check the sound quality/image resolution. Look at other artist’s prices and use that as a frame of reference for your prices. Promotion should be a key aspect of your Music NFT drop. Remember there are plenty of other artists promoting their Music NFTs so you’ll have to try and stand out from the rest. Look on twitter, discord, telegram and other social media platforms to see how others are trying to shill their NFTs. We will also be happy to provide digital assets used for promotion, upon request.

Who are split recipients?

Getting Started

These are co-creators or other third parties (like a charity for example) that will be paid a pre-agreed percentage of the sale price. This percentage will be agreed by the split recipient in order to successfully mint / list the NFT. Once the NFT has been sold, that percentage will automatically be sent to the split recipient. There is no limit to the number of recipients you can add.

Do I hand over copyright when I sell the NFT?

Collectors

No way. you have the right to keep your copyright as the original creator of the artwork. However if you would like to include this in the listing then we will be adding this in the future.

How do I set up an NFT listing, what steps take place from minting to sale?

Collectors

Whitelisting: To be able to mint on autonomies, you first have to be added to our database with your ETH address. Reach out to contact@autonomies.io or fill out our application form and we will get back to you. Create a profile: Once your address has been added to the database, make sure to create an artist profile directly by clicking “Create a profile” in the dropdown menu on the top right corner of the application. Mint an NFT: Once the profile is created, select “Mint an NFT” and fill out the information required. Make sure to have an audio file and an artwork cover ready and name the audio file accordingly. MetaMask: The last step will be to approve and sign transactions on MetaMask for the mint to go through. Voila, your NFT is minted!

Gas fees - What are they and where do they go?

Getting Started

Gas fees will be paid to the polygon network for processing and securing transactions. Gas fees are paid to the network validators, performing Proof of Stake. We don’t get any of the fees paid for gas, and we’ve chosen Polygon to make sure the gas fees are very low. The gas fees are variable, meaning that transactions might become more expensive based on network usage. If the network is congested, validators will prioritise transactions with more gas fees. In this case we suggest you increase the Gas amount directly via MetaMask. On Polygon, gas fees and transactions are paid to the network in MATIC tokens. For more information about how to use Polygon with Autonomies, please have a look at this article: https://www.autonomies.io/polygon-how-tos

Where does the money go?

Web3

X% will go towards the platform fee which we use for our treasury. The treasury supports the maintenance for our team as well as improvements to our platform.Any agreed percentage you allocate to a collaborator will be sent to their wallet address. The cost of the NFT purchased will be sent to the owner you buy the NFT from and on secondary sales (sales after the first sale) a percentage will go to the original creator. These are all pre-decided before buying the NFT so you don’t have to worry.

How can I join autonomies?

Getting Started

Autonomies.io will begin as an invite only platform. You can let us know you’re interested in joining the project by signing up to our mailing list, joining our Discord, and via our application form. Please specify your ETH address when filling out the application form or contacting us. Successful applicants will be granted access to the app. We’ll send you an email notifying you of this. In the future we’ll be releasing a market with non-gated content so more artists can use our platform.

What is a smart contract?

Getting Started

A smart contract is a self-executing contract with the terms of the agreement between buyer and seller being directly written into lines of code. The code and the agreements contained therein are stored on a decentralized blockchain network. The code controls the execution, and transactions are trackable and irreversible. Smart contracts permit trusted transactions and agreements to be carried out among disparate, anonymous parties without the need for a central authority, legal system, or external enforcement mechanism. In the context of NFTs, smart contracts enable the original artist/seller to include sell-on clauses in respect of the future sales. The inclusion of sell-on clauses in smart contracts ensures that the artist is a beneficiary of the secondary sales market by creating provision for them to receive an agreed percentage of future sales of their work.

What unlockables can I add to my NFT?

Artists

Any unlockable can be added to your NFT if specified in the NFT description. There is currently no backend infrastructure that supports the redemption of NFTs, so artists have to bear in mind that they are solely responsible for the delivery of these add-ons. To do so, collectors have to prove ownership of the NFT to the artist. There are multiple ways to do this.

And in some cases, if the music is made by you but an existing publishing deal or contract disallows uploading to our platform, then you should refrain from doing so. We take this very seriously and will pass on the liability to you, as explained in our terms of use.

Are NFTs bad for the environment?

Web3

NFTs per-se are not bad for the environment, but the systems on which they rely can be very energy consuming. We bypass this issue by using a sidechain; Polygon network. The Polygon network is based on Ethereum but operates on a sidechain. This means that assets can be transferred between the Ethereum and the Polygon network while having different security and functional features. One of the core features of Polygon is that it makes use of Proof of Stake; a consensus mechanism that does not require high computing power and is not energy consuming.
